Welcome to the home of CLUB SODA’S COURSES TO CHANGE YOUR DRINKING

Ditch comparison

When we get blown off course, it can be easy to look around and ask ourselves, why me? Why am I not like other people? How come they can handle their drink and I can’t?

So I need you to use that logical part of your brain to ditch comparison. It will only hold you back. Through a set of unique circumstances, life choices, relationships, genetics and experience, we are where we are. We cannot undo the past, and we cannot make ourselves someone else. Nor should we want to!

Crucially, we are not comparing like with like. We are comparing our insides with other people’s outsides. No good can come of that!

How often have we been surprised that someone we saw as strong and capable opens up about their self-doubt? But we know, logically, that nearly everyone has it. We all have our own areas of doubt, guilt and vulnerability. We just don’t share it very often. Only when we do can we begin to really compare and share struggles. We are all paddling furiously below the surface.

Our friends do the same with us in reverse. This is sometimes why we are taken off-guard when people say back to us: “You don’t have a problem. You seem normal to me!”

But you are you, I am me, and they are them. We are all different, and really nobody else can be a better version of ourselves than we are.
