Let’s get WOOP-ing

In this course, we will be WOOP-ing!

As well as cheering on our progress, will be using a scientifically tested tool called WOOP to help you plan. You can use it for your events, difficult days, and even the whole holiday season.

WOOP is a very easy-to-use tool for behaviour change, based on the premise that just dreaming about change and a positive future saps energy – you need to do a bit more. Staying at the wish level can mean you get stuck in loops like I wish things could be different, I wish things could be more like this or that, but those wishes seem unobtainable – there’s too much in the way! However, we can better realise our wishes if we acknowledge the obstacles in our way and how we might address them.

We can break the process down into four steps:

  • Wish: what is it we want to do
  • Outcome: what will things look like if we achieve this wish?
  • Obstacles: what is it that’s getting in the way of us realising our wishes?
  • Plan: what can we realistically and practically do to mitigate those obstacles?

Imaging our best possible outcome, working out what our obstacles are and what we’re going to do if they come up (our if-then plans), strengthens associations in our minds without our awareness, which in turn can increase our energy and result in better performance.

But as we all know, the best-laid plans can go off course unexpectedly when we come up against obstacles we hadn’t anticipated.
