Welcome to the home of CLUB SODA’S COURSES TO CHANGE YOUR DRINKING

Reflect on your strengths

Imagine then how people see you. If we constantly think that everyone else has their life ‘sorted’ people must think the same about us, right?

What is it they see? Maybe it is time to ask. What do your friends see as your strengths? It is a difficult thing to ask but I think you may be pleased with the responses. It gives you a framework of positive skills to turbo-charge your process of change.

You can also list what you think your skills are. They could range from the very functional (I am organised) through to the softer skills (caring, a good listener, great at keeping in touch).

Here is a list to get you going.

How can those strengths help you get to where you want to be?

Here is how it worked for me (with a big dollop of reflection and hindsight here!):

  • I am an activist by nature. So to give up I got angry. I got angry about the one day course I attended that I felt was unethical. I got angry about the lack of resources for me, trying to help myself. I tried to grapple the issue from an intellectual and campaigning perspective – you could say that was when Club Soda was really born.
  • But, despite this anger, I am also a caring person. My new partner gave up with me. This played to my strengths. This was about getting them through this. I was doing it for more than just me.
  • Finally, I am curious. I went on a massive research bender about what I could drink instead. Odd packages of cordials and pink drinks would appear at my door. It wore off slowly. But not until it had played its essential part.
