Understanding motivation

One way that psychologists categorise motivation is by describing it as intrinsic or extrinsic:

  • If our motivation is intrinsic, we do something because it is personally rewarding or fulfilling, for its own sake. The motivation comes from inside us.
  • If our motivation is extrinsic, we rely on external factors to motivate us, such as rewards, punishments and other people’s opinions.

Many of us have a tendency toward one or other type of motivation. If you tend to be intrinsically motivated, you won’t rely on other people’s approval. You would change even if nobody else noticed. If you tend to be extrinsically motivated, you’ll rely on things outside yourself to get you going.

Both types of motivation work. And boosting extrinsic motivation is pretty straightforward – just someone saying “well done” will do the job. But how can you increase intrinsic motivation? Here are three ideas to help it grow:

  • Curiosity. Whether it’s your behaviour, your relationships or your palate, pay closer attention. Be curious about change. “I wonder if …” is an excellent way to spark curiosity.
  • Challenge. If your motivation is dipping, push yourself. Whatever you’ve been avoiding because it felt too hard, make a plan and start today.
  • Cooperation. Sharing your experiences and hearing other people’s stories can boost your motivation. Find others who are pursuing the same challenges as you, and encourage each other.
