Introduction

In addition to the usual times that we drink, our rituals and traditions, the holidays can give us a whole load more times when we might drink, or when drinking seems an inevitable part of proceedings. The holiday season, steeped in rituals and traditions around celebrating the occasion, can add greatly to the pressure we can feel.

Avoiding drinking is hard during the rest of the year, it creates urges and discomfort, because of the strong association that has built up often over many years. 

Avoiding drinking in one-off situations such as parties or events might not lead to strong cravings, but might require us to have some plans in place to deal with the expectations of others, and for declining when drinks are offered.

Or maybe you feel that a possible pitfall is not a social situation, but the place where you usually buy your alcohol – such as the supermarket on the way home from work.
